Parental Controls on Every Streaming Platform: Complete Setup Guide

Every major streaming service offers parental controls, but the quality and depth of those controls vary wildly. Some platforms make it nearly impossible for kids to stumble into inappropriate content, while others leave gaps that require extra attention. This guide walks through the exact setup process for each service and highlights what each one does well and where it falls short.

Netflix: The Gold Standard

Netflix offers the most comprehensive parental control system in streaming. You can create separate profiles for each child and assign maturity ratings that restrict content to specific age ranges: Little Kids (TV-Y), Older Kids (TV-Y7, TV-G, G, PG), and Teens (TV-14, PG-13). Each profile can also be locked with a four-digit PIN to prevent children from switching to an adult profile.

Beyond profile restrictions, Netflix lets you block specific titles by name. If a particular show or movie falls within your child’s maturity rating but you still do not want them watching it, you can add it to a blocked list. Netflix also provides a viewing activity log for each profile, accessible through the account settings page, so you can review exactly what your children have been watching.

To set up controls, go to Account, then Profile and Parental Controls. Select your child’s profile and adjust the Viewing Restrictions setting. Set the maximum maturity rating and add any specific title blocks. Then create a Profile Lock PIN under the same menu to prevent unauthorized profile switching.

Disney Plus: Built for Families

Disney Plus was designed with families in mind, and roughly 90 percent of its content library is appropriate for younger audiences. The platform offers a dedicated Kids Profile mode that restricts content to TV-7FV and G-rated titles only, with a simplified interface designed for younger viewers.

The standout feature is Kid-Proof Exit, which prevents children from navigating out of the Kids Profile without entering a parent’s PIN. This solves the common problem of curious kids switching profiles to access mature content. Disney Plus also lets you set content ratings for individual profiles and restrict access to titles rated above a certain threshold.

One limitation worth noting: Disney Plus groups PG and PG-13 content together in some rating tiers, which means a profile set for a ten-year-old might still surface some PG-13 material. Parents of younger elementary school children should use the strict Kids Profile rather than custom rating limits.

Setup is straightforward. Go to Edit Profiles, select the child’s profile, toggle on Kids Profile for the strictest restriction, or set a custom Content Rating limit. Enable Profile PIN under the same settings to prevent profile switching.

Max (HBO): Strong Controls, Mature Library

Max carries HBO’s prestige library, which includes a significant amount of mature content from shows like Game of Thrones, Euphoria, and The Idol. The parental controls here are essential rather than optional. Max allows you to create Kids Profiles restricted to content rated TV-Y7 and below, and you can set custom maturity rating limits for teen profiles.

Max requires a PIN to switch out of a Kids Profile, and you can set a separate PIN for purchasing add-on content. The viewing history for each profile is accessible through account settings. Max also provides per-profile restrictions on specific content categories, which is helpful if you want to allow teens to watch PG-13 movies but not R-rated HBO originals.

The main concern with Max is that its algorithm sometimes surfaces promotions or trailers for mature content on the main landing page before a profile is selected. Make sure kids go directly to their profile rather than browsing the main screen.

Amazon Prime Video: Adequate but Clunky

Prime Video offers parental controls, but the setup process is less intuitive than competitors. You can create child profiles with age-based content restrictions, and Prime Video uses viewing PINs to prevent unauthorized purchases and restrict access to specific content ratings.

Amazon also offers a separate Amazon Kids Plus subscription for $4.99 per month, which provides a completely walled-off environment with curated content for children. This is the best option for younger kids because it eliminates any possibility of encountering inappropriate content.

The standard Prime Video parental controls are set through Settings, then Parental Controls. You can restrict content by rating and require a PIN for any purchases or rentals. The PIN applies account-wide rather than per-profile, which is less flexible than Netflix or Disney Plus.

Apple TV Plus: Simple and Effective

Apple TV Plus leverages Apple’s system-level Screen Time controls, which means parental restrictions are set at the device level rather than just within the app. You can restrict content ratings, prevent purchases, and set viewing time limits through your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV settings.

Within the Apple TV Plus app itself, each family member’s profile inherits the content restrictions set through their Apple ID’s Screen Time settings. This integration is elegant but means you need to manage controls through Apple’s Settings app rather than within the streaming service directly.

Paramount Plus and Peacock

Paramount Plus offers Kids Mode, which restricts content to age-appropriate titles and simplifies the interface. A PIN is required to exit Kids Mode. The controls are functional but basic compared to Netflix or Disney Plus.

Peacock provides parental controls through its Kids Profile option with content rating restrictions. The controls work adequately, though Peacock’s smaller content library means there is less to worry about overall.

Best Practices Across All Platforms

Regardless of which services your family uses, follow these universal steps. Create individual profiles for each child rather than sharing a single kids profile. Set a PIN on every adult profile to prevent profile switching. Review viewing history monthly to spot anything concerning. Turn off autoplay on children’s profiles to prevent content from playing automatically after a show ends. Use the strictest age setting that still provides enough content for your child’s actual age and maturity level.
